Who should we believe in the issue of infiltrations? I believe the leaders on the battlefield. On November 18, Major General Charles Swannack, Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division that patrols much of Iraq's eastern borders with Syria and Jordan, said that his men had encountered almost no foreigners trying to sneak into the country to carry out attacks against American and allied forces. He said, "I want to underscore that most of the attacks on our forces are by former regime loyalists and other Iraqis, not foreign forces."

Major General David H. Petraeus, Commander of the 101st Airborne Division, which controls northern Iraq, reiterated these views. The New York Times published these statements with other details in the 19th of last month. The Washington Post preceded it on October 20th.
