China can make another great leap forward
By MARTIN WOLF
FINANCIAL TIMES

CAN China continue to grow at anything close to current rates for another two decades, or even more? The answer is a resounding 'Yes'. China may not do so but it certainly could. The record of other fast-growing East Asian countries since World War II shows not how quickly China has been closing the gap with the world's most advanced countries, but how slowly.

The official Chinese objective for the two decades from 2001 to 2020 is for gross domestic product (GDP) to quadruple, as it has done, on official measures, in the past two decades. Quadrupling GDP over the next 20 years, a compound growth of 7.2 per cent a year, is eminently achievable. Nothing is easier than to list the obstacles. But obstacles are opportunities. If they are removed, performance can improve.
