The credibility issue is in the eyes of the beholder. There is a great deal of discussion of nationalism and super-nationalism in the EU area(350 million people). The whole debate and stalemate on the EU constitution is an example of just that.

As to "Being an American, I'm not a big fan of carving up the world along ethnic lines.. I'm far more inclined to create the political, legal, and economic systems that encourage and reward people for tolerance and cooperation with one another." I don't doubt that Americans and most Europeans believe this.

The problem is that the US government does not have a history of practicing what its people preach, witness Iran, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, and Chile among many. Nor do the European governments as Bosnia and Kosavo show.
