Hussein's Capture Is Yesterday's News

alternet.org

The capture and public humiliation of our super-creepy ex-ally answers none of the intractable
questions facing Iraq and the United States about the occupation.

You don't read very well. I said, "It's a case of putting the matter formally on record for the sake of order and honour and justice." Notice the last word.

For a prosecutor it's a slam dunk. The evidence is on the order of film of a guy sticking up 7/11 and blowing away the counter person, only enormously bigger. Lots more witnesses and lots more film. Probably take a couple of months.

The defence has it tough. No plea bargaining here - the prosecution wants to go to trial.

What's this yak about a "fair trial"? You think they're going to make up evidence? Do a google - iraq, mass graves, or iraq, torture, or iraq, mass murder and Iraq, president.

Of course there's going to be a trial, by Iraqis. They have laws Saddam broke. And they have competent jurists who can try it. (In Baghdad courts alone, there have been thusands of actions brought against former regime members). Most Iraqis want to see it done for the sake of order, honour and justice. And when it's done they'll hang him, or whatever.

You sure are getting your knickers in a twist:

Why have a trial -- why not accuse him and execute him? Well, its that little thing called the rule of law that gets in the way -- but without the rule of law you are no better than those you accuse. The power to invade Iraq, the power to corner and capture Saddam do nothing to demonstrate anything superior about our system, until their is a fair trial.
