the capture of the Iraqi evildoer-in-chief is no doubt of considerable symbolic value. but it has also shown that what i maintained a few months ago is no doubt true: this tired and sorry looking old man hasn't been masterminding a guerilla. difficult to do from a small hole in the cellar...he actually didn't look much different from the winoes hanging around garbage cans in the back alleys of our big cities.
nevertheless, the fact that the tyrant is gone for good will no doubt be greeted with relief by most Iraqis...but then again, this imagery of defeat personified in the picture of the hounded former potentate may also have unforeseen psychological effects.
there has been a considerable amount of back-patting on display in the US media , coupled with widespread predictions that the capture would diminish the resistance, but why would this multi-faceted decentralized insurgency depend on a single old man, whose chief occupation over the past several months seems to have been hiding out in a dank cellar?
i frankly doubt that the popular conclusions are valid...not a lot of change likely on the ground. and it sure is not a particularly good reason to bid up the stock market.
