SMS all the rage in China
15/12/2003 12:57 - (SA)
Shanghai - China will account for one-third of the world's short messages sent by cellphones this year, nearly a 10% jump over 2002, state press reported on Monday.

China Mobile, the country's largest provider of cellphone services, estimates this year's short messaging service volume will hit some 170 billion messages, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported.

Short messages have proven hugely popular in China due to their very low cost.

Last year, China saw the volume of short messages rocket 25%, compared to seven percent growth in 2001 and just one percent in 2000.

With 250 million subscribers China is the world's largest cellular phone market.
