Manufacturers urged to look toward China

NORTH CONWAY - These days, U.S. manufacturers view China as a competitor with a number of unfair advantages, but it should also be viewed as a potential market.

That was the message last week at the state's eighth annual meeting with economic development professionals from around the New Hampshire at the Red Jacket Mountain View hotel.

"It is such a unique opportunity for New Hampshire to sell its top products in large quantities," said Karen Wyman, an international trade specialist for the state Office of International Commerce.

Because China is gearing up for the 2008 Summer Olympics, it needs a wide variety of pollution control devices to clean up its cities before the games, Wyman said. It also needs a lot of IT equipment because more and more of the process will be computerized, including electronic tickets, she said.

David Stewart, founder and president of Poly Roll Inc., said he visited China on his own to see the competition up close and has come to realize he may have to set up a portion of his manufacturing in Asia.

"It's daunting to think about setting something up in China, or Taiwan or Thailand," Stewart said. "The labor in China is one-twentieth what it is here, so if you were paying someone $20,000 here to do a job, it would be $1,000 over there. It's staggering if you begin to do the math."
