Arguably, the death penalty is too good for Saddam. Life in prison would be more humiliating. Personally, I'd like to see him executed, but I keep trying to think about it from the standpoint of history. We really have never had exactly this type of thing happen before.

Hitler killed himself, as did most of his henchmen. Most of the defendants in the Nuremberg trials were smaller fish. Mussolini was killed by his countrymen, ditto the Ceauscescus. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, died in their beds. Milosevic is on trial but we don't really care that much about him. Not that I am saying he's a good person, he's just not our personal enemy.

Napoleon was imprisoned on Elba but I don't think the Brits tried him.

Kaiser Bill was deposed and I think he moved to the Netherlands, didn't he?

So many old dictators give up their thrones and move to the Riviera. Maybe Saddam is hoping for that.

Hmmm. What to do? 'Tis a puzzlement.
