Extraction of methane from hydrates is energy intensive usually requiring catalysts and expensive equipment. As one of the world's leading figures in catalyst and methane/ammonia production has said, It's a waste of a natural resource to burn it in vehicles.

Present estimates are that oil sand production is very energy intensive and that it pollutes heavily. See Hubbert's Peak.

In any case bringing these sources on line requires time and expert opinions tell us that the projected increase in demand(65% by 2020) will consume more than is being produced.

Read the Cheney report again and the problem becomes clear.
