I doubt very much that most people in the United States even knew who Saddam was, much less where Iraq or Iran were and their significance.

On the other hand, I don't doubt that you were sympathetic to any Soviet client state. My recollection is that you have expressed sympathy for the Soviet puppet government in Afghanistan, and thought that we were wrong to support the Mujahideen against them. Forces of modernity and all that.

I certainly wasn't sympathetic to Saddam back then. I was in law school from 1983-1988, working more or less full time, pregnant in 1985 and 1987. I couldn't keep up with every little war, especially because I got my news from the New Orleans Times-Picayune and never watched TV. Take 1988 as an example. The big events were Iran-Contra and Afghanistan.
