"Most Americans had never heard of Iraq back then. I remember because I met a couple of people from Iraq and they were amazed that I knew where they were from."

You seem to generalize about peoples and nations by the few that you meet. Most americans never heard of iraq because a couple of people you met from iraq were amazed that you knew where they were from?? This is illogical. However i do agree that most americans didnt know iraq very well back then. mike

"I do have a hard time believing that, for example, the average New York Jew felt any love for Saddam. After all, the Israelis bombed the Iraqi nuclear power plant in 1981."

CB,
The Israelis bombed the nuclear plant for obvious reasons--it was to be the source of the saddam nuke. After the elimination of the reactor, Jews in the 70s/80s were ambivalent as to who the greater danger was--Khomeni or Saddam. As a matter of fact, the iranians were leading the world terror movement during this time and many of their targets as well as planes brought down killed many jews. Until the attack on kuwait, Iraq may have been perceived more as a regional threat to israel than a global threat to jews. In 1991, the iran and iraq threats to the west, US, israel were pretty much in balance. Iran has removed itself from global terror while continuing to support Hamas, hizbollah and other "local" terrorists. My belief is that it will be proved in the future that saddam and bin laden were working jointly with the iraqi role in the background for obvious reasons. Mike
