Our foreign policy that included supporting tyrants against larger perceived threats whether that was Communism or Muslim fanaticism is just plain wrong and most Americans would go along with that today. Times change. I can make these statements today remembering the "duck and hide" drills to protect us from USSR nuclear attack. I also remember the perceived horrors of the Iranian hostages and how it destroyed Jimmy Carter, one of the brightest, sincerest, moral politicians in history. Would he have saved his Presidency by coming out and stating that the US had supported an undemocratic regime (Shah) and this was wrong? Would it have grabbed a moral imperative and changed the path taken by Iran and IRaq? It's easy in hindsight to say "couldn't have been worse." As I posted, Carter and his people were extremely bright and had access to "intelligence" that is still classified.

Indoctrination and propaganda in the US was and is real and I support fully those who call for the truth to come out.

Yet - claiming that we are worse somehow than other nations, whether they be democracies, theocracies, dictatorships or loose confederations is neither true nor constructive.

It's time to stop the name calling and come up with real policies and to recognize principles that may us forward as a superpower - and I don't use that term just militarily or economically.

I remember the 1980's and Saddam was not a US ally. He was considered a lesser evil than Khomeini however.
