You are looking at this in entirely the wrong way, E.T.

War is a very important resource on which everyone is dependent with no exceptions, US more than most because of its high consumption. Who controls the oil pretty much controls those dependent on it, not much different from the dealer/junkie love/hate relationship.

If the junkie ever gets the chance to lay his hands on some heroin laboratory, I assure you he will take it, whether or not heroin will be on the market forever.

Oil is not just a commodity. It is power. It is control.

When the US was attacked on 9/11, the irresistable chance to rally Americans' support behind this operation to seize control in the Middle East emerged. Shocked and terrified, Americans gave their approval to the invasion of a country that not only has never threatened the US but had no relation to the tragedy of September 11.

So now, the US is the de facto occupier of the country that has the second largest oil reserves in the world.

Now, you can try to justify this any way you want. The fact of the matter is that US invaded Iraq primarily because of oil and geopolitical power. And US invaded Iraq just now and not years ago when Saddam was as his brutal best, because (1) Iraqis' sufferings is not and has never been a factor in the decisions of the White House, and (2) The catalyst, some sort of excuse to rally American support behind the invasion, was just not there.

And the US no longer has to be buddies with Saudi. History just might get interesting over the next couple of years...
