You're right, in California they figured out something vastly more sophisticated and lucrative. "They" know that demand for electricity is basically inelastic. Ergo, prices go through the roof and manipulators hauled off the equivalent of today's deficits in California and more.

While you fine folks in Auckland seem to have almost gotten through the first term books on Economics, the sharks on this side of the pond have engaged in post-doc work on the subject.
