NEW AFGHANISTAN EMERGING AS Woman elected to bureau of Loya Jirga

KABUL: One woman was named a vice-chair of the Constitutional Loya Jirga tribal council, which on its second day of work finished electing its bureau, the United Nations mission in the country reported on Tuesday.

In a further sign of progress for women in the country where under the Taliban they had been banned from even working two of the bureau’s three secretaries are also female, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The former Afghan President Sequatullah Mujadidi was elected as Chair of the council.

Meanwhile, debate on the new constitution later got underway later in 10 smaller tents amid sharp differences over the most suitable system of future government for Afghanistan. Delegates interviewed were divided between supporters of the current draft and those who would rather see a parliamentary system to counterbalance the president. “We want a strong presidential government which suits the present situation in Afghanistan,” Haji Ghulam Khan, a delegate from eastern Laghman province said. —AFP
