East Asia rebounds by China's growth

Singapore, Dec 17 - East Asia is emerging from 2003 with remarkable resilience by riding China's growth wave and the US economic recovery to rebound from the double whammy of the deadly SARS epidemic and the Iraq war.

Surging exports and record-low interest rates are enabling the region to wind up the year on a strong note with the prognosis optimistic for 2004.

"The booming demand from China has kept many of these markets buoyant," said Ifzal Ali, the Asia Development Bank's (ADB's) chief economist.

Cautioning that the explosive pace in the US, the world's largest economy, may not be sustainable, Ali regards China as a driver of intra-regional trade and economic growth in east Asia.

"China keeps humming along and is likely to continue doing so" to the benefit of east Asia's export-driven economies, he added.

Exports from throughout Asia to China increased rapidly during 2003, prompting the ADB to expect the economic giant's imports to rise about 25 per cent in each of the next two years.

The ADB sees an average 6.1 per cent growth for 2003 and 6.6 per cent in 2004 for China, South Korea and the southeast Asian nations on the back of China's expansion and the improved outlook for the US.
