Mr. Schultz is currently the chief operating officer and executive director of Ashanti Goldfields Company Limited and will be retiring from that position at the end of the year. During his seven years with Ashanti Goldfields, Mr. Schultz led the Group's aggressive gold expansion program in Africa, including the development of three new gold mines in Ghana, Guinea and Tanzania. Through a distinguished career that has spanned more than 40 years, Mr. Schultz has held the following positions: 1995-96 -- senior vice-president and chief operating officer, Pegasus Gold Corporation (Spokane, Wash.); 1994-95 -- president and CEO, Aurtex Inc. (San Francisco, Calif.); 1979-94 -- senior vice-president and group general manager, BHP (Melbourne, Australia); 1972-78 -- mine manager, Rio Tinto (Australia, Namibia and Papua New Guinea); 1970-72 -- senior research fellow, University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa); and 1959-72 -- various underground mining positions, Anglo American Corporation (South Africa). Mr. Schultz earned an MSc of mining engineering from the University of Witwatersrand; an MA in economics from Trinity College at Cambridge University and studied advanced management at Harvard University. Commenting on Mr. Schultz's appointment, SouthernEra chairman, Dr. Chris Jennings, said: "There are few international mining executives with the operating experience of Trevor Schultz.
