New regulation took or will take effect on new truck production to filter some of this, but I bet school busses are exempt.pennenvironment.org I was looking for some info this morning on how mercury gets into 'black liquor' that results from pulp mfg. I was thinking, "Like what, is mercury in the trees?" Thus far I am less than successful in finding a simple source pointing to a smoking gun. I did make a mental connection. Pulp plants often mix coal with bark chips to burn as a fuel source. This would put mercury from coal into the fuel stack emissions, but I don't see the connection here to the black liquor. Oxidation of the black liquor is an alternative to diluting it via dumping in the ocean. With oxidation of the black liquor, there appears technology to capture the mercury emissions. I was pleased to see the Judicial Branch set Bush et al back a bit- I consider it a personal xmas gift. Re your fish consumption comment- My original concern was that the ultimate source of the mercury in the fish was the bioaccumulation of mercury via algae conversion from inorganic to organic, then concentrated up the marine food chain. Then this am, my search turned up this, mercola.com which suggests the dental ammalgam used may be a far more significant problem, especially for children and neonatal. I've read in the past, that much of the dental mercury passes through the digestive tract unabsorbed, but it is also true that some of us breath through our mouths on occasion, thus inhaling it. At times, I'd rather not think of the life I've led, with water (contaminated with cryptosporidium, MTBE...) the air I breath (lead, soot, other organic solvents), the food I eat (fish & mercury, pcbs, game, BSE sourced prions, growth hormones), my own dental care and vaccinations... Well, it is remarkable that I'm alive and semi-sane. Speaking of which, I was looking at some info on Angola, when I noted the average lifespan was 36. So I suppose in that sense, I'm pleased to still be here, and occasionally remark on the larger picture. Which at times seems insane. But then, what are we to expect, in a world populated with Mad Hatters such as myself? <g>
