If his own people do it in a very public way, with a big trial to show the whole world to see, I think the Islamic world would not treat him as a martyr.

Probably something many people are thinking about right now.

If he is given a life sentence, he becomes a magnet for dissidents. They hope to free him and get back in power.

And where do you hold him? Any place he is kept becomes a target for Saddamistas.
