There's life yet in equities
2004 may not yield the same bounty as this year's, but downside risks are limited. Genevieve Cua reports

THE year has turned out to be a gratifying one for those who ventured into equity investments, with regional and global equity funds delivering double-digit returns.

Even more robust were the returns of single-country Asian funds. Thailand equity, for instance, was at the top of the heap for the period between end-December 2002 and Dec 5 this year, with returns of 91.5 per cent.

China equity funds rose 68 per cent, and India equity 67 per cent. Over a three-year period, the cumulative returns from Thailand and China equity were even more gravity-defying at 154.8 and 103 per cent, respectively.
