I don't understand what you are trying to say.

Maybe you should try to say more clearly why invading a country by force is preferable to supporting its own dissidents or trying the carrot approach, especially given the absence of any immediate threat.

Statements like "Saddam wanted a neo-Babylonian empire" are not helpful in understanding the situation.

Saddam was a ruthless dictator but he is not stupid. He does repeatedly shown that he is a man with strong self-preservation instincts. He could hence be reasoned with with the right "carrots".

Furthermore, the human cost of an Iraqi civil war would have been immense. Hundreds of thousands of deaths on both sides

But there would be no civil war, because pretty much ALL the Iraqis hated Saddam and wanted him gone, right???

Unless, of course, you want to revise your viewpoint to suggest that almost half the Iraqi nation actually supported Saddam.

He wanted Kuwait and Khuzistan for starters. Then eastern Saudi Arabia. In other words, all the oil bearing territories in the Gulf region.

Do you realize we are talking about a guy with no such attempts at aggression over the past decade? Yes, he did try out his ambitions. They failed. That he was aggressive more than a decade ago is hardly a very bright argument to invade Iraq NOW.

There are plenty of countries which would see it in their interest to aid Saddam in holding on to power. I think we know exactly who those countries are. They're the same ones who opposed the present war.

That is rubbish and you know it.
Canada had an interest in Saddam holding on to power? Turkey had an interest with Saddam in power?
Are you high?
