Veiled Threat
France is threatened by schoolgirls in headscarves.

The French, God bless them, are finally joining the war against Islamic extremism. Their targets, which will now confront the full force of l'etat, are schoolgirls who wear Muslim head scarves in French public schools.

President Jacques Chirac endorsed the scarf ban yesterday, heeding the advice of a recent task force on the subject. The schoolgirls might not rank with Iraq's Baath Party as security threats, but it seems the French feel the scarves pose a grave challenge to their concept of secularism, which they believe to be the cornerstone of the modern French state.
