I've heard this argument before. And, I will admit, it has the virtue of being the only argument that is at least within the realm of plausibility, but I don't think it's correct either.

It would've been easy for Saddam Hussein to willingly agree to UN weapons inspections. And, even if after several years had the UN inspectors come up completely empty I doubt any of Hussein's neighbors would've believed that he had gotten rid of those weapons.

Nobody in that region trusted Saddam. His neigbors would've simply believed that he had hidden the WMDs better than the UN could find them. There are still a lot of people in that region and the U.S. who still believe that's exactly what he did!!

Sorry, but Hussein had it made in the shade and he blew it. He should've let the inspectors in. Historically speaking his miscalculation is right up there with Hitler when he said 'let's attack Russia'.
