<Did I say that? I don't think so.> I'm sorry, er, excuse me if you interpreted my comment this way, but I was only suggesting that your statement implies this at some level.

<"I'm afraid...." in your post which means you are probably a Brit.> LOL. Not quite. I should have probably said, 'i suspect' (but then your psychoanalysis would have likely led to a diagnosis of paranoia - in addition to the rest of my psychological baggage!)

<economic development is the primary answer, the sine qua non to quote elmat, to all of mankind's ills> OK, let's agree that it is. But this still leaves us with a question of how well free markets handle the distribution issue, and i guess this is where some people have an problem with unrestrained free markets - since it results in distributions that seem not to maximize the well-being of a society (but others would say are only unequal...and the whiners on the short end of things are simply jealous).

In addition, the argument for unrestrained free markets leads to (and this was really my point) its use as the basis for decision-making in aspects of human existence where economic efficiency ought not to be the primary consideration. (didn't we have someone here a few weeks ago talking about child bearing decisions in the context of children as assets and liabilities? Egads!)

<I strongly suggest that money can in fact buy happiness>

Hmmm. Interesting comment. I plan to discuss this with my therapist at our next session and will see if i can't get you a professional evaluation. (g)
