I am listening to reports on Sharon's speech. "Palestinian officials react with dismay", says the BBC. I don't know why they should. Israel is proposing doing just what it has refused to do for the last three years - withdraw under fire. Shouldn't they be pleased? Or is dismay merely their default posture, designed to elicit sympathy from the usual chorus of sympathisers? or do they just complain because they haven't organized their thoughts yet?

On the one hand, they will have a definite victory. On the other hand, they will be in a bad position once they get it, Israel behind the wall, more or less immunized to suicide bombers, with Pal economy in ruins, etc. etc. Probably no political system either, when Arafat dies. Sounds like a formula for turning the West Bank into another Southern Lebanon. I wonder if Hizbullah will move in, they're better organized. I wonder if the world will blame Israel just as hard for holding 20% of the West Bank as they now get blamed for holding most of it. Probably.
