Corporate China raids S. Korean high-tech companies
The buyout frenzy of these ailing firms has industry players worried about the loss of South Korea's technological edge

SEOUL - Chinese companies are on a buying spree in South Korea, snapping up financially troubled high-tech companies, particularly manufacturers of semi-conductors, flat-screen panels, mobile handsets, digital appliances and automobiles.



This is part of a worldwide corporate hunt China has embarked upon since July to narrow its technological gap with advanced countries in key industrial sectors.

The buyouts have prompted industry executives in South Korea to warn of large-scale leaks of cutting-edge technologies, the Yonhap news agency reported yesterday.

Corporate China took over a Japanese pharmaceuticals maker in July and a German home appliance producer last year, while its number of equity investments in British companies increased by 22 over the past year.

In South Korea, besides taking over local companies, Chinese enterprises are pushing to form joint ventures to get quicker access to advanced technology.
