HK papers say China envoy spied
HONG KONG - A former senior Chinese envoy here was a spy who sold state secrets to Britain, two newspapers claimed yesterday after it was disclosed the man had been detained in Beijing.

Former secretary-general of the Central Liaison Office Cai Xiaohong was detained over allegations of leaking state secrets, China's state media reported on Wednesday.

Two Hong Kong newspapers, the Oriental Daily News and the Sing Tao Daily, said yesterday that Cai had divulged information to British intelligence agents.

The newspapers did not identify their sources but were first with the news that Cai had been detained.

The Oriental said Cai was suspected of having accepted bribes of up to HK$6 million (S$1.3 million). -- AP
