Iraq Shi'ite Party Hit in Fresh Bomb Attack

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An explosion destroyed a Baghdad office of Iraq's largest Shi'ite party on Friday in an attack the movement blamed on Saddam Hussein supporters.

While Iraq has seen no let up in violence since U.S. forces captured the ousted dictator on Saturday, Iraq's U.S. administrator Paul Bremer admitted he had escaped an assassination attempt in Baghdad in early December.

"Yes, this is true, but thankfully I am still alive and here I am in front of you," Bremer told reporters in the southern city of Basra on Friday when asked about media reports that he had survived an assassination attempt some two weeks ago.

Attacks on Americans are set against a backdrop of political and sectarian violence that threatens to undermine efforts to improve security as the U.S. administration prepares to hand over power to Iraqis in June.

Witnesses said a woman was killed and up to seven people wounded in the blast at the Shi'ite party offices in Baghdad.

The Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq which works with U.S. occupiers, blamed Saddam loyalists, as it did after Wednesday's assassination of one of its leaders. The group represents Iraq's majority Shi'ites long oppressed by Saddam.

"The men of the regime and terrorist elements are behind the attack," Mohsin al-Hakim, a party official told Reuters.

Some residents said a bomb had leveled the house while others reported hearing aircraft overhead just before the explosion. U.S. military officials declined immediate comment.

Washington has vowed to stamp out attacks it blames on Saddam's followers against U.S.-led forces and their Iraqi allies that have killed nearly 200 American soldiers and claimed scores of Iraqi civilian lives.

U.S. television network NBC News said on Thursday Bremer was returning from Baghdad airport when his convoy hit an explosive device and his armored vehicle came under small arms fire. The convoy was able to speed away and no one was injured, NBC said.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Baghdad that same day.
