these events will be simultaneousand of course folks will argue about cause -- but let's think about policy reponse here as consumers pull in and start "balance sheet repair" in earnest.

The only thing the Fed can do to stimulate more borrowing on credit and/or prevent a collapse in financial assets would be to compeletely trash the dollar. Do you think they are willing to do that?? I don't think they are willing to do that "all at once."
