China could overtake Japan in S-EA trade

(SINGAPORE) China's growth has changed the trading patterns of Southeast Asia and the country could eventually overtake Japan as the region's second biggest trading partner, according to FedEx Express' Asia Pacific president.

'Traditionally, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines' (key) trading partners were the US and Japan - we're seeing a shift, with China becoming one of the top two or three trading partners,' David Cunningham told The Shipping Times.

'South-east Asia is . . . becoming much more integrally linked to the China market as it grows.'

FedEx is shipping more components built in South-east Asia to China for assembly, which are then being exported back to consumers in this region, as well as the US and Europe, and vice versa, he added.

'It's really a mixed bag, but it is indicative of the growing role of China from an economic standpoint and a trade standpoint with Asia - which if you look 10 years ago, it would have all been oriented towards the US and Japan and Europe.'

Mr Cunningham said the prospect of China eventually becoming a more important direct trading partner than the US or Europe is 'going to take some time to happen', if ever.
