The agreements signed with Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Cape Verde, and Mauritania covers the supply of energy, cement, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, sugar mills and agricultural products. Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, has pledged UN support to China and Africa in their cooperation, declaring that UN will "spare no effort to back any initiative that may contribute decisively to the reduction of poverty." In a statement read at the Second Ministerial Meeting, Annan said, "in the modern era, China was a consistent supporter of the African liberation struggle, and African nations were firm friends of China in the United Nations and other multilateral fora. "If the same spirit is brought to meeting other challenges, such as ensuring food security and fighting HIV/AIDS, China can help Africa make real steps toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals," he said. Annan noted that Africa in turn remains strategic with emerging markets that offer huge investment opportunities to the Chinese private sector. At the three-day meeting attended by 250 businessmen from Africa and 150 from China, an action plan to promote co-operation and to serve as a guideline for the conduct of business between China and Africa also includes the launching in 2004 of negotiations for zero tariff on some goods from Africa into the Chinese market. thisdayonline.com
