Hydropower plant to be built on Yangtze River

CHENGDU - A new hydropower plant will be constructed on the lower reaches of the Yalong River, a major tributary on the upper Yangtze River.

The projected hydropower plant, which has been approved by the State Council, China's highest governing body, will be situated in both the Muli and Yanyuan counties of Yi autonomous prefecture of Liangshan, in southwestern China's Sichuan province.

The new hydropower plant, Jinping first-tier hydropower plant, will be constructed with a 305-meter concrete dam and will have a combined installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts, said Chen Yunhua, general manager of Ertan Hydropower Development Co Ltd. The Ertan Hydropower Plant is further downstream of the Yalong River.

According to Chen, the new hydropower plant will start construction in 2005 and will be finished in 2013. It will cost 23 billion yuan (US$2.77 billion). On completion, the new plant will be able to generate 17.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.
