[EDITORIAL]Growing Chinese presence

China is showing a keen interest in taking over high-tech Korean companies, which is a cause of great concern to the Korean business community. It also poses a serious challenge to the Korean government.

A Chinese company has recently acquired a Hynix Semiconductor division producing TFT-LCDs, high-end flat-panel displays. Now several Chinese companies are competing against one another to take over Orion PDP, an Orion Electric subsidiary manufacturing another type of advanced flat-panel displays - plasma display panels.

China's foray into Korea is not just aimed at acquiring small companies holding cutting-edge technologies such as Orion PDP or Hydis, formerly a Hynix unit. It is also targeting capital-and technology-intensive companies, including an automaker.

Normally, foreign direct investments are welcomed, as they help create jobs, promote exports and bring in new technologies and advanced managerial skills. But Koreans are looking at Chinese investments with wary eyes instead of welcoming them wholeheartedly. They have good reason to do so.
