Closer to "8.9%" if you add back in the officially classified "unemployed, discouraged, and no-longer actively looking for work" people --- referenced in the appendix of the Labor Department stats.

Pretty easy to keep a nice, low, appealing 'headline number' if you change the definitions so as to remove large chunks of unemployed from the 'official definition'....

Unemployment is much higher than 6%. Many people have quit looking for jobs. Also, wages and benefits are down which means a real weakening of the middleclass consumer. The 20% devaluation of the dollar since Bush took office shows you how much weaker we are as a nation. Bush dollars are worth only 80 cents.
