Thanks John, for those kind words.

However, I am pleased that you see the point of the "respect". It is, indeed, to those very people with whom one disagrees that one usually wishes to convey one's point of view. In fact, as so frequently happens under such circumstances, the communication breaks down and the dialog ends in a slanging match, or worse.

But I will go even further. I have come to the conclusion that this internet experience may be more about oneself than one's ideas. I do it because I feel it is a growth and a learning experience for ME, besides often being a lot of fun. But, in order to get that growth and learning one has to establish lines of communication, and not only with one's pals. As in daily life, the way to do it is by having good manners. So, in fact, learning to communicate on the internet has the reciprocal benefit that it teaches one how to communicate in one's daily life.

There are many more aspects: the ability to think quickly, write quickly, and with good grammar and spelling, not to get upset, not to take oneself too seriously, not to offend others (too much!), use the internet well etc. In fact, when one thinks about it, there is really a lot to it.

But finally, I regard it as a privilege to be able to communicate with another person --- just to exchange thoughts, ideas and even emotion. And writing is much more intense than speaking because one has to think more about it. So, this is really a very serious business but, unfortunately, it has been trivialized because many/most do not appreciate it for what it is.

I agree on all of your points, John! Thanks for writing to me.

And I will try to do better in exercising restraint in calling RWEs ugly names. -g-

I just received this article in email from a friend that contains an interesting reference to GOLD.

The readers of this thread might enjoy it:

<<Several of his aides also face inquiries, including a deputy chief of staff who pleaded guilty to steering state contracts to firms in exchange for cash and gold, some of which he buried in his backyard.>>
