>> Very sad.

It is, to me, as well. The company is dying from a failure to innovate. Once, Borland could be counted on for the most innovative software concepts.

Remember the early IDEs, then Delphi? These were really new and attractive things. For that matter, Quattro Pro brought about more innovation in spreadsheet technology than anything that was done after Lotus. Oh, how I long for the "old days".

Of course, Microsoft has its eye on the ball -- the BIG ball -- they want a piece of every online transaction, and one day, will have it. .NET is the first step in this process.

Perhaps the best hedge against using Borland tools is owning Microsoft's stock.

Just for those who don't know the project, here comes a couple of links to the FreePascal project and the Lazarus project, both projects aim to provide a Delphi for Linux that's free and Open Source:

freepascal.org
lazarus.freepascal.org

My experience with Lazarus is, that it's still a bit buggy, but looks a lot better than Kylix, much easier to install, makes better executables (not depending on qtintf.so and it works with non-x86 platforms), and it loads pretty much faster than Kylix.

I wonder if Borland will make any legal claims on this, though.
