Not only does every major advance cost someone a job somewhere, each advance improves our general lot, and shifts the money and the jobs to a myriad of other industries. With free markets "ruthlessly" allowing gas station attendants to lose their jobs, still in the long run jobs are gained overall. The money saved creates the walleted means for spending in other areas to increase over and above what would otherwise be possible. With legal self-service, all the gas gets pumped that needs to be pumped, and with the savings, consumers get to create jobs elsewhere by spending on other things they would have had no money for otherwise. Therefore, more gets done by allowing these evolutions to take place, unlike in New Jersey, apparently.
