Considering that there is such a thing as structural unemployment, it makes sense to provide against family and community crisis through unemployment benefits, just as we aid victims of natural disasters. The idea is to provide incentive to return to work as soon as possible. Frankly, most unemployment benefits, in most states, are so low that anyone with a family, and many without, have ample reason to return to work. I do agree with the general principle, of course, which is why progressivity in marginal tax rates discourages working for advancement, and thus, vindicates supply side theory.........
