I agree with you 200% on the patriotic value of criticism; I was being sarcastic regarding the McCathryite charges hurled in our direction for questioning US policy in Iraq here and on other threads.

And I applaud you grasping that alienating the allies we need in the modern world is a dumb idea.

As for independence, we may reduce oil imports but the US is so intertwined with the rest of the world in trade, security, immigration, environment and health issues among many others, the "unilateralist" fantasy is just that, a fantasy.

We can tell some countries to *&%^ off on one issue, but we will be back at their doorstep the next day about something else. They know that - they aren't stupid, no matter how many names we call them.

Unilaterlism only succeeds in a unipolar world, which this most certainly is not.
