The LAT off-leads an investigation of the Justice Department's
list of 280 criminal cases it says are terrorist-related. When
the Times asked for supporting documents through the Freedom of
Information Act, the government produced a redacted list of about
half that number, many of which appear unrelated to the war on
terror.

The FTAA Police Riot was much more heinous than was Cancun, Seattle, Washington, D.C. Mobilization for Global Justice and other anti-WTO/ anti-World Bank-IMF demonstrations.

What we had was a clear escalation in the threat to our democracy by an out-of-control police frenzy. The government decided to mis-allocate $8.5 Million earmarked for Iraqi reconstruction and instead spent it suppressing grandmothers in Miami. I know this because I have a woman friend who is 69 years old, all of 5'0" tall and weights 98 lbs. and she was manhandled by the police.

Furthermore, the police employed agents provocateur who witnesses saw coming out from behind police lines in order to attempt to incite the crowd to riot.

Clearly, this sort of police behavior is un-American and more in keeping with the repressive techniques of authoritarian/totalitarian states.

There is a grave danger to our democracy rising today. The new Northern Command for U.S. military operation within the domestic borders is red flag. The unwillingness of the police to acknowledge that acted with excessive force in Miami is another red flag.

When peaceful, thoughtful, decent American citizens are intimidated, gassed, clubbed and brutalized without provocation by the police it is time for us to stop and ask just where the hell things are headed.

Four years ago, the New York Times columnist wrote that brutalization of foreign populations would be necessary to effect globalization:

"The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist -- McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell-Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies is called the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps."
-- Thomas Friedman, "A Manifesto for the Fast World", New York Times Magazine, March 28, 1999

Today, it appears that the brutalization has been deemed to be necessary at home as well.

This is a shameful truth.

ANOTHER FUTURE IS POSSIBLE!
