We wouldn't have won the War of Independence without the French Navy.

No doubt about it. But my point was that they participated in the American Revolution for their own selfish reasons. Their goal was to undermine British power, while advancing their own interests..

Remember that France still owned the Louisiana territory at that time.. They had SIGNIFICANT assets at risk..

Additionally, it was a chance for a bit of revenge of their defeat in the French-Indian wars.

But it certainly was not to advance the cause of democracy. They anticipated that the new American nation would fall into their sphere of influence and help to consolidate French control over N. America.
