He rushed to grab her and smother the flames, burning himself seriously in the attempt, but his wife died from her wounds. Soon the Civil War erupted all around him, and Longfellow witnessed Americans butchering brother Americans and destroying lives, homes and cities in the bloodiest war this nation has ever known. In the midst of the carnage, he received news that his son, a soldier, was killed. At this horrible time in his life he heard a familiar but seemingly ironic sound, and the great poet was inspired to write: "I heard the bells on Christmas day their old familiar carols play And mild and sweet the words repeat, of peace on earth, good will to men. I thought how as the day had come, the belfries of all Christendom Had roll'd along th'unbroken song of peace on earth, good will to men. And in despair I bow'd my head: 'There is no peace on earth,' I said, 'For hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men.' Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: 'God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, good will to men.' 'Til ringing, singing on its way, the world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, of peace on earth good will to men!" Longfellow realized that, even in the midst of terrible personal and national suffering and loss, a sovereign God still ruled over all created reality. It was surely that realization that caused him to understand that the bells on Christmas day were not a hideous irony, but truly heralded the only effective remedy for the world's sins, woes, and griefs: the advent of Jesus the Messiah into the world.
