Thanks appro, I appreciate your post. Unfortunately my cable system doesn't carry True Stories Cable. I'll look for the documentary on one of the online stores.

When Ken Burns did his mega documentary on Jazz he neglected to give Blue Note Records it's due.

A few years back, 1979-1980, I was in a phase of my counter-culture existence that involved making a living doing stain glass work. Among other things I worked craft shows and got to know a lot of interesting people. One outdoor show I did I happened to be set up next to a couple of guys about my age. They were leather craftsmen and also did some artistic graphics work. They happened to have a tape player and for the three days that the show lasted they played exclusively jazz and black rhythm and blues. At the time motown had not had its revival and was pretty much forgotten and they had lots of Smokey and company. These guys became friends of mine.<g>

Anywho...they mentioned that they had a storefront shop and invited me to stop by. The name of their establishment was The Blue Note. It became an informal hangout for me. I asked them why they named the place The Blue Note, thinking Harold Melvin, and they told me nope they named it after Blue Note Records.

So your post brought back some pleasant, if somewhat ganja induced foggy memories.<g>
