We mourn the loss of manufacturing jobs ("real jobs") and ignore growing aesthetic professions

Interesting. I am willing, eager, to spend extra on things that are well made and aesthetically pleasing, like a Le Creuset frying pan, or Sierra Nevada ale. But one of the ways I afford these luxuries is to shop for them at Costco and T.J. Maxx.

She's right that the Christmas lights come from China these days, and she's also right that they seem to be better made than they used to be. Somehow, China has passed the position of just being cheaper, and is now starting to be better. Reminds me of when I was a kid, when "Made in Japan" meant cheap and broke easily. Those days are long gone.
