DMA,
I avoided the draft during vietnam as best i could. I remember the day the lottery occurred and how drunk i got that night because my number was high. I will never be 100% sure whether my anti-vietnam views came purely from conviction or and overriding fear of fighting/dying in vietnam. That TV war scared the bejesus out of me each and every night.
I will also never be sure what i would have done if i had been drafted. I dont have a clue but i was convinced at the time that since i was not particularly athletic that i probably would not have survived basic. Having said all of that, i am for the draft as a last resort forcing folks like me back then to make that choice. That choice perhaps would be made by further analysis of the war we were being drafted into. Boy that was so long ago. mike
