NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Nanogen (NGEN) was surging $2.57, or 34 percent, to $10.07, and reached a 2 1/2-year high of $10.29 in intraday trading. Volume was already 7-times the full-day average 13.5 million shares. Shares of other companies involved in developing nanotechnology, which allows the manipulation of matter at the molecular level, were also rallying. Nanophase Technologies (NANX) was climbing $1.57, or 21 percent, to $8.97; Altair Nanotechnologies (ALTI) hiked up 43 cents, or 18 percent, to $2.78; Nanometrics (NANO) rose $1, or 6.4 percent, to $16.60; and NanoSignal (MSGL) rallied 2 cents, or 15 percent, to 15 cents. President Bush signed into law earlier in December the "21 Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act," which provides $849 million for nanotechnology research and development in 2004.
