When this Republic was founded the power rested first with the people, then the states, then the very small and limited in power federal government. "The People" back then were white land owners as you said. But the federal government was made weak and was intended to stay weak. It was never intended to be able to force it's will on the states and on the people as it does today. Our founding fathers would not be proud of what we have today. They would call it tyranny. They would not even call it a democracy. But you keep quoting what you learned in the government school you went to. It's all you know and you have to cling to it for security. The government today is afraid of the people. That the people will wake up. So the people have become a threat to the federal government. Thus all the new terrorism laws which are really there to protect the government from the people, not the people from terrorism. The new terror laws allow for anyone to be classified as an "enemy combatant" and they then lose all their constitutional rights. In effect the constitution does not exist for them. It is defacto suspension of the constitution for all who dissent with this government in Washington. Tyranny.
