Economy, Saddam Boost Bush in Opinion Poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Signs of an improving economy and the capture of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) gave President Bush (news - web sites) a boost heading into the 2004 election campaign, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Monday.

Bush's overall approval rating stands at 59 percent, but the poll found that a majority of Americans -- 51 percent -- approved of his handling of the economy. It was the first time he was above 50 percent since late April.

On the subject of Iraq, 60 percent of the respondents in the poll out on Monday said they approved of how Bush was handling the situation, compared with 48 percent in mid-November. Fifty-nine percent said the war was worth fighting, up six points in a week.

The poll also found that 63 percent thought the war was justified even if the United States did not find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
