i believe govt had him classified as a prisoner and mia?????

Yes, there were reports that he was a prisoner.

I don't believe MIA fits either. Like POW, MIA refers to soldiers and a battlefield.

Dean's Brother may have been MIA from the Savannakhet or Pakxe locales, but he was not MIA in the same sense as a soldier becomes MIA on a battlefield.

The point is that it was another Dean falsehood. When asked about his family's history of military service, he tried to manipulate us into thinking that his brother was a US Military POW/MIA. Dean should have said my family does not have any history of serving in the US Armed Forces, if he wanted to be truthful.

The best term to describe what happened to Dean's civilian brother is to say he disappeared in Laos in 1974.

Hundreds of thousands of Laotian Hmong tribesmen were killed during the killing field days of the Pathet Lao (which also included millions more in Cambodia). Most of that happened in the 70s. 15,000 were killed in prison, usually by a blow to the head to conserve the cost of bullets.

Those being killed had formerly supported the French and/or American war efforts. As an American, Dean's brother would definitely not have been welcome. He could easily have been caught up in this slaughter.

FWIW, 4,000 Hmong tribesmen who just escaped the brutal on-going oppression in Laos to Thailand have just been approved for immigration to the US.
