shiloh,

"States Rights" is RWE code for Racist"

Actually, the issue of 'states rights' has always been the cause celebre of liberals. Liberals and the civil rights movement were first and foremost in the effort to move the Federal government into affirmative and legal actions against racism, most particularly in the 60's & 70's.

I always supported this cause. Civil rights was one problem that could never have been solved by the individual states since laws and prejudices varied so widely from one state and region to another.

I thought federal 'intervention' was the only way to bring about massive changes in racial attitudes.

Furthermore, I believed it was morally and legally justified as the issue struck at the very heart of our constitution, namely the right to vote and the right to be treated as an equal. It was quite properly a federal issue.

When Sidney goes on ranting about 'States rights' it does remind me of the days when Gov. George Wallace, Gov. Orval Faubus and Strom Thurmond, and many others, used that term as a code word for 'I support racism'.

At a minimun Sidney is an insensitive clod. At a maximum he knows exactly what the term 'states rights' is all about. Personally, I hope he's just oblivious to the world. Being dumb is no sin and it's better than being intentionally malevolent.
